ppc-jobprep

level :  intermediate

Job Preparation is a practical English course designed to prepare students for a position in the Canadian job market. For four weeks they will learn about the local job market, develop strategies to be successful in interviews, and learn to write effective cover letters and resumes. These essential aspects of job seeking will be the foundation of the course. Upon graduation students should have a firm understanding of the Vancouver job market including how and where to look for jobs. Preparing professional cover letters and resumes will give students an enormous advantage in the competitive environment that most job seekers must face

This course not only helps students to find jobs, but also prepares them to work. Key skills and workplace language are developed. The course focuses on transferring practical expressions that can used regularly at work. Therefore key areas include Customer Service English and Telephone Language. Each week focuses on a different set of vocabulary and expressions needed in the most common areas of work for ESL students. In particular, English for the hospitality and restaurant trades are emphasized. Numerous role plays are utilized to give students the experience and confidence to be an asset in their workplace.

By the end of this course, students will be equipped with the skills to find a job in Canada and to be successful in that job.

ITD (Korean/English)

ppc-itd

ITD (Interpreting and Translation Diploma Program) is a unique and challenging 8 week program. The course is divided into two main components; the first is for translation and interpretation, the other is for speaking and pronunciation. The class is designed to take your English to the next level by improving your vocabulary and strengthening your grammar. Through this program, you will learn how to analyze complex sentences that you come across on a daily basis in various texts such as news articles, magazines, and radio programmes etc. Using real world material introduces students to a much broader range of vocabulary and more challenging, yet practical sentence structures. To maintain balance, students will have the opportunity to work extensively on their speaking and pronunciation.

The program is delivered by both Korean and Canadian instructors.

Tests

1) Vocabulary Test:

Every Monday morning, you will take a vocabulary test based on the words you learned the week before. To help you study for the test, the list of vocabulary will be given to you beforehand. The test is composed of two types of questions; one is to complete each sentence with a proper word and translate it, the other is to make a sentence using a given word.

2) TT Test (Translation Tips Test):

Every Wednesday morning you will take a test based on the translation tips you learned the week before. ‘Translation tips are taught every Thursday morning and are based on certain words or grammar points that are mentioned during the class. On the test, you must translate sentences, either English to Korean or Korean to English.

3) Weekly Test:

This test is based entirely on the articles or the example sentences that you translated during the week. To pass the test, you must get at least 60%.

4) Final Test:

Every forth week, you will take a final test. The final test is cumulative, which means it will include everything we learned over the month. Please do not cram right before the test. I strongly recommend that you set aside time to review every day.

Assignments

1) Weekly assignments:

Presentation: you and your partner –one person speaks in English, the other in Korean, taking turns - must prepare a 15 minute presentation connected to the topic of the week.

2) Final Project:

You choose your own material by Thursday of the first week and translate it for a month. The project must be submitted by Tuesday of the fourth week. The printed material must be at least 1 page long (not double spaced), and the video/audio clip must be at least 3 minutes long.

International Business

This course is designed to balance practical, real world business language with the knowledge needed to understand the ever changing international business market. The program is divided into two distinct months. Both months are extremely intensive and require both focus and effort. Students are tested throughout the program. Elements from numerous tests are drawn upon including, the Cambridge BEC series and the TOEIC (primarily TOEIC Speaking) test. Classroom hours are as listed above. However, each student will be required to commit a significant amount of extra time to review, homework and preparation of assignments.

Business vocabulary is one of the more challenging components of any Business Program. Vocabulary quizzes will be administered at least twice a week in addition to weekly tests.

Throughout the course students are required to submit various assignments. For example, cover letters, resumes and proposals. Deadlines are strictly enforced and extensions shall not be granted. These assignments are usually due on Fridays.

In addition to quizzes, tests and assignments, final grades for each term will also take into account, attendance and participation. Due to the intensive nature of the program, missing classes can leave students at an enormous disadvantage.
